Erica's competition Experience

Published on: August 24th, 2016

A month on and here is what Erica had to say.........

Finding models for the Hairdressing competitions was my first step and it can be the hardest, as with competition work it is not always your usual salon hairstyle and it can difficult to find people who are willing to be a little adventurous.

Once I had sorted my models and put together a plan for the categories I was going to  enter in I began to practice, some nights after work I stayed back with the team and practiced on my models so when the day came I could execute my creations seamlessly. It’s not just the hair we have to plan for our models it’s everything from the perfect outfit, make up, shoes to the nails so that it complements the hair but does not take away from the hair.

With it being my first time participating in the hairdressing competitions or even going to comps, I was very nervous as I had no idea what to expect. Getting my models ready, outfits put together and thinking about how I’d go with time limits etc. On the day it was very stressful. I arrived at work at 7am and began getting my models ready make up, hair all done and once I was there my first two events where over and done within the first 1hr so I could relax for the rest of the day until my last event which was at about 4pm. After a long, exciting day where I saw so many amazing talented stylists who came up with some incredible creations, I thought I didn’t stand a chance against them.

When prize giving came around and they announced me as winner of Senior Stylist the Cut presentation, winner of the Hair by Night presentation and fourth place in the Colour event I was in total shock! Needless to say it was an amazing experience and I hope more hairdressers give it a go next year, it’s a chance to do something creative and completely different to the everyday stuff.
